Turkish National Defense Minister Hulusi Akar and Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu have signed a memorandum on the establishment of a joint center to monitor the ceasefire in Nagorno-Karabakh.

Describing this memorandum as an important step to maintain the ceasefire and stability in the Karabakh region, Hulusi Akar wished the activities to be carried out under the agreement be effective and beneficial for the region.

In order to increase the effectiveness of control over the implementation of the agreements by the Parties to the conflict, a peacekeeping center shall be deployed to exercise control over the ceasefire. The provision on the establishment of the peace control center is included in the statement signed by the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia and President of the Russian Federation.

The decision to establish a joint monitoring center will allow a reliable control over the parties' compliance with the cessation of the hostilities and will provide a sound basis for the settlement of the conflict.

The joint center, which will be deployed on the territory of Azerbaijan, will be involved in collecting, summarizing and verifying information on the observance of the ceasefire. The center is to deal with any complaints, questions, or concerns related to violations of the agreements.
