UN General Assembly President praises work done at national level to achieve Sustainable Development Goals in Azerbaijan
Minister of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan Jeyhun Bayramov has met with President of the 76th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) Abdulla Shahid.
At the meeting, the sides exchanged views on Azerbaijan's activities within the UN, cooperation with specialized agencies of the international organization, future activities and other issues on the agenda.
Minister Jeyhun Bayramov noted that the visits of the UN General Assembly presidents to Azerbaijan have become a tradition. He stressed that the current visit coincides with the 30th anniversary of Azerbaijan's membership in the UN. The Minister congratulated Abdullah Shahid on his successful presidency in the UN General Assembly at a time when the world is going through a very difficult period.
UNGA President Abdullah Shahid noted that Azerbaijan is one of the most active member states of the United Nations and congratulated on the 30th anniversary of UN membership. The President praised the successful chairmanship of Azerbaijan in the Non-Aligned Movement. He expressed gratitude to the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan for his leadership in multilateralism. The UNGA President praised the globally important initiatives put forward by the President of Azerbaijan against the COVID-19 pandemic. Abdullah Shahid also highly appreciated the work done at the national level to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals in Azerbaijan.
The sides exchanged views on priority issues of the UNGA presidency, including work with youth, climate change, gender equality and other topics.
Minister Jeyhun Bayramov briefed the UNGA President on the current situation in the region, including the restoration and reconstruction work carried out in the liberated territories, demining process, as well as the steps taken by Azerbaijan to normalize relations with Armenia. He said Azerbaijan would continue its efforts in all important areas to ensure peace and stability in the region, including the signing of a future peace agreement, delimitation of borders, opening of all communications and other issues.
President of the UN General Assembly Abdullah Shahid said that Azerbaijan's efforts to build sustainable peace in the region and its creative work are commendable.
At the meeting, the sides also discussed other issues of mutual interest of the UN agenda.
